What is trauma-informed yoga?

Trauma-informed yoga is an approach that addresses the specific needs and symptoms of trauma survivors. We understand that trauma doesn’t just affect the mind – it can be held in the body. We recognize that a trauma-based approach to yoga makes the practice safer and more accessible to the unique needs of trauma survivors.

Trauma-informed yoga includes self-regulation strategies to increase body awareness (interoception) in a safe way which promote feelings of psychological, emotional and physical healing. We also address nervous system dysregulation, feelings of disconnection from the body or surroundings (disassociation) which are common after experiencing trauma.

At Beloved Yoga, we currently have one of the most innovative and science-based therapeutic trauma-informed yoga programs in the Northern Virginia area.

We have a team of trauma-informed yoga therapists/teachers who are available to teach weekly classes in residential mental health and addiction treatment programs.

We are bringing trauma-informed yoga awareness to many spaces in the area such as George Mason University’s MSW program, the World Bank Domestic Violence program, pastoral counseling programs, Fairfax County District Court probation officers, World Medical & Policy programs, Loudoun County Jail, various local law enforcement agencies, INOVA Trauma Survivors programs, Prosperity Eating Disorders and Wellness Centers and addiction recovery programs
