- Sunday, Jan 24, 7 p.m.: Intro to life and poetry of St. John of the Cross led by Susan Boruff
Sunday, Feb 21, 7 p.m.Comparative of St. John of the Cross (Christian Mysticism) and Buddhist principles, eastern philosophy spiritually Led by Susan Boruff
Come join us for two evenings of discussion and meditation with the poetry and prose of St. John of the Cross. St. John of the Cross was a Christian mystic who lived in Spain in the mid 16th century. He is considered to be the most famous poet in Spain , but is also known for his writings on the much misunderstood "Dark night of the Soul." As a Christian mystic, his theology is based on our LOVE relationship with God- the lover and the beloved- and this is reflected in his poetry. His prose examines our deepest longing for God and what prevents us from realizing our true nature- our oneness with the Supreme Being. He further discusses how we misplace our love and become attached to things other than God.
Additional discussions will include comparing and contrasting St. John of the Cross's instructions regarding the ego with Buddhist principles. The following are excerpts from St. John's poem- Living Flame of Love and the writings of the great Buddhist master, Nagarjuna:
How gently and lovingly
You awake in my heart
Where in secret You dwell alone;
And by Your sweet breathing
Filled with good and glory,
How tenderly You swell my heart
With love.
May Bochichitta, precious and sublime
Arise where it has not yet come to be;
And where it has rise may it not decline,
But grow and flourish ever more and more.
Awakened heart, Longing
- Sunday, Mar 14, p.m. Bhagavad Gita - Intro and selected readings
Sunday, Apr 25, p.m. Bhagavad Gita- Study Circle Led by Maryam
These two evenings will immerse us into the rich history and philosophy of one of the most important epic poems of history the Bhagavad Gita. Bhagavad-gita is also known as Gitopanishad. It is the essence of Vedic knowledge and one of the most important Upanishads in Vedic literature. The content of the Gita is the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna taking place on the battlefield before the start of the Kurukshetra war/ Responding to Arjuna's confusion and moral dilemma about fighting his own cousins, Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and prince and elaborates on different Yogic and Vedantic philosophies, with examples and analogies.

All-Levels Asana Practice Aimed at Hamstrings & Hips
An accessible asana practice focused on the 'how' and 'why' of increasing flexibility in our hamstrings and hips, with an introduction to the concept of 'marma' from Ayurveda. Marma provides the link between physical practice of asana and the health of our organs and even of the chakras. This will be an active practice that includes Vinyasa, Standing Poses, mild Backbending and Forward Bending, and of course some hip openers, with insights into principles for the health of the low back, sacrum and hips, filled with 'news you can use!'
Sat, March 20, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. $60/$65
The Shoulders In Depth: Finding Freedom in the 'Sweet Spot'
This asana practice will focus on the shoulders, providing user-friendly insights into how to get them to work better for you through the practice of yoga poses. You'll get a better understanding of the muscles that tend to get tight and limit shoulder movement -- and even cause us pain right down to the wrists -- also how to align, release and strengthen these all-important joints. It will include a range of stretches and poses, and tips you want to remember, as well as a look into the influence of the marma points involved upon the breath -- with connection to breathing issues such as asthma, as well as breath-related issues such as stress-related fatigue and fibromyalgia.
Sat, Mar 20, 2:30 - 5 p.m. $50/$55 late
Ayurveda, Hatha Yoga and Marma Therapy: The Big Picture
Doug will set the philosophical context first, looking at the purposes of yoga and of practice from the Vedas and Upanishads, through 'Classical Yoga' to Tantra, to locate just where Ayurveda and Hatha Yoga fit in, both as practical sciences of health and healing, and foundations for spiritual growth. Then we can better understand the 'big picture of the role that Ayurvedic concepts of the 'doshas' play in our physical, emotional and spiritual life, and how the practices of hatha yoga play an indispensable role through their influence on 'Marma' energy (through the asanas) and upon our emotional response to the doshas (through pranayama). This session will focus more on Marma, including helpful specifics on key marma points, as well as insights into sequencing of your practice. Sunday morning will continue with these themes, focusing more on 'Prana Rasa' -- the influence of Prana on emotional and spiritual life.
Sun, Mar 21, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. $60/$65
Prana Rasa: Hatha Yoga and the Power of Prana
A brief introduction to the powers inherent in Prana known as soma, surya and vayu that form the basis of the doshas, followed by a short asana practice that will touch upon all aspects of these 'powers,' as well as how they are stimulated in asana practice. From that 'warm-up,' we'll delve into the 'secrets of the breath,' focusing particularly on the 'rasas' (essences of emotion) intimately related to the breath. This will include discussion of the meaning and role of 'Rasa' or emotion in the Ayurvedic system of healing, how emotions are both 'held' and 'released' through practice, and the specific role of breathing practices in this process -- particularly of the pranayama techniques of 'Swara Yoga,' which is pranayama focused on the movement of breath or energy through the nostrils. This approach to pranayama is particularly powerful for shifting our emotional states toward more constructive patterns of feeling, and we'll be doing these practices of the breath with an eye to their influence upon the subtle emotional 'taste' of the rasas, as well as upon the energies of the chakras.
Doug's teaching is rooted in a vast and inclusive perspective of study and practice that honors the insights of the many streams of wisdom that flow into the river of yoga. Doug teachings illuminate aspects of yoga that seem esoteric but he makes them accessible with humor and wisdom. For bio and further info on Doug Keller please visit www.Doyoga.com
